So I am wondering what oppo thinks on this. What THE BEST sports car you can get for under 15,000 US dollars.
My vote is split between the car my honda fan boi heart wants, and a much much more powerful car.
Honda S2000.
Good: Drop top fun, great looks(subjective), lots of after market (boost) if you decide you need it, great handling characteristics(oppo), and it's not so rare or special that you couldn't dd it, no traction control.
BaD: it might be hard to find a nice unmolested one for under 15k. so buying a modified one may be the only choice.only a wee lil 4 pot, I can't think of anything else, idk I guess you'd lose in a drag race with a C5.
C5 Corvette.
Good: LS1 American V8 power, great looks, fairly practical for a sports car, plenty of aftermarket support, really comfy seats, it come in dark green.
Bad: you're now a Corvette guy lol, IMO it'd be annoying to DD but I could be wrong, stupid traction control system, it's going to have at least 100,000 miles on it to fit the budget.

As a S2000, I think I have one of the best bargains in cars. But, they kinda have more problems than people like to admit.

Here's an Abarth for under $15k, I'd say that's a contender.

RX8 with a fresh from the factory engine with all the updates.
Hell, 2009+ are getting there and are much MUCH more reliable from what I've heard.

Porsche 968 or 911SC:
Pros: 3.0L I4, 230hp, RWD, manual trans, practical hatch(unless you get a cabriolet), good fuel economy, it's a Porsche. Can be found with less than 100,000 miles.
Cons: It's not a 911.
Pros: 3.0L Flat-6, 180-204hp(depending on the year), decent fuel economy, fairly practical for everyday use, air cooled sex noises,it's a 911, and it's a Porsche. Can be found with decent mileage
Cons: Some maintenance costs are high.

I keep forgetting that they are not expensive. In my mind they are still 40,000 dollar cars, but I could say the same for Corvettes.

I think finding a 911 under 20000 would be a real struggle at least a decent road going one.

I'd go for a E46 330ci ZHP. You can get one in good shape for around $10,000.

I'm SUPER biased: I DD my C5 and the only time it gets annoying is NEVER! It rides well, is great on gas, looks good, handles well enough to scare me, and once you put a nice shifter in it (I have an MGW) is a joy to drive. I have aftermarket mufflers and they sound awesome without being obnoxiously loud, too. Plus, insurance is cheap and you can put things like C6 wheels and shocks on them for almost no money.
For perspective, my C5 replaced my 2008 Civic Si that shared roughly the same power delivery as an S2000. It was a blast to flog, it sounded great... but sucked ass in traffic unless you wanted to drive around 2 gears lower than necessary. You had to really think about your choice of gears way more than you should. Sometimes that's fun, but sometimes you just want to turn the music up and tune out. In the Corvette, every gear is the right gear (except 6th, that shit's a 0.50:1).

I gotta say it. SRT6.
pros: styling, 330-350hp (depending on who you believe), 1G in corners, only 3k lbs, under $15k all day with lowish miles.
cons: styling, auto only, Merc repair costs.

My brother just sold his 2003 Boxter for around $15,000. For a mid engined Porsche, I'd say thats a pretty good deal.

You can find some nice SHOs in that price range.

i am biased but I'd say s2k. I've got an 05 S2k I've had since 08 and I'm looking to sell for around 12.5K 67k miles and original engine and drive train. So it isn't too hard to find them. I just want something different so I'm unloading all my cars.

This is where I'd normally post a pic of my C5z. Prices are really down now. Tons of aftermarket support. Easy to work on and not much breaks. Decently fast. Corvette Stigma sucks, but I don't care when I'm behind the wheel. My good friend Matt owns a 2.4 Liter stroker sleeved all motor S2k that rocks. He can beat me in a tight autocross by a little, but I take him out everywhere else. Favorite though may be my other friend Erik's LS1 FD. Over 400 at the wheels with great suspension and gorgeous.

I like that you put styling as a pro and a con. Auto only is strikes one, two, and three for me tho.

I know the Crossfire's reputation, but fair enough.
Also don't know if anyone else has said it yet but the GTO is also worth a look. 400hp is still 400hp.

I like the GTO too, but the C5 won out in the looks department.

Why do you think the corvette would be annoying to DD? It'd be better than an S2K IMO. Smooth V8, it can cruise in low rpm so it gets relatively good gas mileage, it's basically a grand tourer so it's very comfortable

Pretty sure he meant finding a decent 911SC—you know, the one you originally mentioned—for under $20k.

low seating position, and low ground clearance plus every one would awe at you, and give you a thumbs up, ugh... Lol

This is it. I want an S2000 as well, but then the C5 Corvette is another car I want in the same price range too.

I'm surprised you think C5 seats are comfy. The seats in the C5 I tried recently were kinda crap. But I still sorta kinda like C5s.
Other ideas:
Porsche 944 Turbo
Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo
Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 / Dodge Stealth R/T Turbo

well I guess the only C5 I've driven was a 50th Anniversary it may have had special seats, but they were great.

To me, the bottom part of the seats in both the C5 and C6 isn't long enough front to back. Not enough thigh support.
They're not terrible, but far from what I would call "great."

that's just as true for the S2k minus the thumbs up. It had better ground clearance too I suppose
